Tango Underground

Jeffrey Collins

bandoneon

Jeffrey Collins began his musical journey at age 10 with the saxophone at Bell Street Middle School in Clinton, SC.  Curious about the instruments he heard around him, he soon picked up oboe, flute, and clarinet.  After graduating from the University of South Carolina, Jeffrey joined the band program of the United States Air Force and was stationed at Scott AFB near St. Louis.  Because of a fear of barbers and a smart mouth, Jeffrey left the USAF after one enlistment.  Following military service came a Master's degree in clarinet from Southern Illinois University.  Jeffrey soon started playing saxophone with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, including numerous tours and performances in Carnegie Hall.  At the turn of the century, Jeffrey became obsessed with the nuevo tango music of Astor Piazzolla and the tango instrument bandoneon.  Recently moving back to St. Louis, he formed his latest tango quintet, Tango Underground.  Jeffrey continues to play saxophone with orchestras and enjoys his life as a freelance teacher and player.
