Tango Underground

Biography

Five Saint Louis musicians with various musical backgrounds have come together to form the unique lineup that is Tango Underground. The musicians are Peter Henderson on piano, Jeffrey Collins on bandoneon, Amy Greenhalgh on violin, Dan Rubright on guitar and Ben Wheeler on bass. The band is modeled after Astor Piazzolla's own tango quintet and features his arrangements just as they were played by Piazzolla himself. What makes the music and ensemble unique is the instrumentation and blend of styles. Peter, Amy, and Jeffrey are all classical players that frequently perform with the Saint Louis Symphony and other orchestras nationwide. Dan and Ben bring years of jazz improvisation and composition experience to the group. Jeffrey, mostly known as a reed player and doubler, has taken on the bandoneon which has become the voice of the tango worldwide. The bandoneon, a complicated and challenging instrument began its life in Germany and soon found its way to Argentina and the tango community. The instrumentation and blend of tango, modern jazz, classical music, rock and avant-Garde elements creates a sound that Tango Underground (with a synergy all their own) brings to life.
